Varanasi Municipal Corporation Unveils Major Infrastructure Projects at Assi Ghat
The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is spearheading a significant infrastructure enhancement initiative at the iconic Assi Ghat, with two major projects currently under construction. The corporation is investing a substantial Rs 9.84 crores to establish a state-of-the-art mechanised multi-level parking facility, while simultaneously developing a modern food plaza with an allocation of Rs 2.14 crores. These developments are part of the broader Chief Minister Global City Development Scheme (CM-VGNY), aimed at transforming Varanasi into a world-class destination.
Addressing Traffic Congestion and Enhancing Tourist Experience
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, in a conversation with TOI on Saturday, confirmed that work on both projects is progressing at an accelerated pace. Following his inspection of the sites on Friday evening, Nagpal expressed confidence that the facilities will be fully operational within the next four months. The mechanised parking system has been specifically designed to alleviate the severe traffic congestion that has plagued Assi Ghat due to the ever-increasing influx of pilgrims and tourists.
The unavailability of adequate parking space has led to persistent traffic bottlenecks, creating inconvenience for visitors and residents alike. The new multi-level parking facility aims to provide a permanent and efficient solution to this longstanding problem, significantly reducing vehicle pressure in the area.
Modern Amenities for Domestic and International Visitors
In parallel, the construction of the contemporary food plaza is set to enrich the cultural and culinary experience for visitors. This facility will enable both domestic and foreign tourists, who flock to Assi Ghat to enjoy its renowned morning ambience, to savor authentic Banarasi delicacies in a comfortable setting. The integration of these amenities underscores the corporation's commitment to strengthening and beautifying the city's infrastructure, with a keen focus on accommodating the growing number of tourists and devotees.
Additional Infrastructure Improvements and Beautification Efforts
During his inspection tour, Municipal Commissioner Nagpal also visited the raw pumping station located in Bhadaini. After a thorough examination of the premises, he issued directives to officials from the Water Works department to commence immediate beautification work across the entire station area. Nagpal emphasized that facilities related to the city's critical water management systems must be maintained in a clean and organized manner to reflect the city's heritage and operational efficiency.
The inspection was attended by key officials including the Chief Engineer (Civil), the General Manager of Water Works, the Assistant Engineer of CNDS, and other departmental representatives, highlighting the coordinated effort behind these infrastructure upgrades. These initiatives collectively represent a holistic approach to urban development, addressing both practical needs like parking and water management, as well as enhancing the overall aesthetic and experiential quality of Varanasi for its residents and visitors.
