The Uttarakhand government has constituted a high-level committee to investigate alleged irregularities in the handling of donations at the revered Badrinath temple, one of the four holiest shrines in Hinduism. The decision comes amid growing concerns over the management of funds and lack of transparency in the temple's administration.
Panel Composition and Mandate
The committee, headed by a retired high court judge, will include senior officials from the state's religious affairs and finance departments. Its mandate is to thoroughly examine the procedures for collection, recording, and utilization of donations, which amount to crores of rupees annually. The panel has been asked to submit its report within three months.
Allegations and Complaints
The move follows complaints from devotees and local priests about mismanagement of funds, with some alleging that donations were not being properly accounted for. According to sources, the temple trust had received several complaints regarding the lack of transparency in the donation process, prompting the government to intervene.
Government Statement
"The government is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of all religious institutions," said a spokesperson for the Uttarakhand chief minister's office. "This committee will look into the allegations and recommend measures to prevent any future irregularities."
Impact on Temple Administration
The Badrinath temple, located in the Chamoli district, attracts millions of pilgrims each year. The temple's income from donations and offerings is substantial, and any mismanagement could undermine the faith of devotees. The government hopes that the probe will restore confidence in the temple's administration.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time the temple has faced scrutiny. In 2024, a similar committee had looked into allegations of financial mismanagement, but no concrete action was taken. The current government has vowed to take strict action based on the findings of the new panel.
