Uttar Pradesh Government Announces Major Progress in Wastewater Management
The Uttar Pradesh state government has declared a significant milestone in environmental management, revealing that it is now equipped to treat approximately 85% of the wastewater generated daily across the state. This announcement underscores a robust effort to address water pollution and enhance public health standards.
Current Wastewater Treatment Capacity and Figures
According to official statistics, wastewater generation under urban local bodies alone stands at 5,500 million litres per day (MLD). The government has reported that it is currently treating over 4,500 MLD, demonstrating a substantial capacity to manage urban effluent. This achievement is part of a broader strategy to mitigate environmental degradation and promote sustainable water practices.
Namami Gange Mission Boosts Sewerage Infrastructure
A government spokesperson highlighted the pivotal role of the Namami Gange Mission in strengthening the state's sewerage system. The second phase of the Namami Gange Mission provided renewed strength to the state's sewerage system, the spokesperson stated. Under this initiative, 74 sewerage treatment projects were approved in Uttar Pradesh, with 41 already completed and operational. Currently, there are 155 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) operational across the state, facilitating this enhanced treatment capacity.
Ambitious Target for Treated Water Reuse by 2035
To ensure zero wastage and maximize resource efficiency, the government has set an ambitious target of reusing 100% of treated water by 2035. An official mentioned that a comprehensive policy is being prepared to guide the safe reuse of treated wastewater. This plan will be implemented in three phases, focusing on practical applications to benefit municipal operations and public spaces.
Phased Implementation for Water Reuse Initiatives
The reuse strategy will include the utilization of treated wastewater by municipal bodies for various purposes, such as:
- Irrigation of parks and public gardens
- Road cleaning and maintenance activities
- Other non-potable applications to conserve freshwater resources
This phased approach aims to integrate treated water into daily municipal functions, reducing reliance on freshwater sources and promoting environmental sustainability.
