Trichy MP Durai Vaiko Urges Union Minister to Fast-Track Underpass Construction on National Highway
In a significant move to enhance road safety, Trichy Member of Parliament Durai Vaiko met with Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra in New Delhi on Friday. The MP strongly advocated for the immediate commencement of construction work for two new vehicular underpasses (VuPs) on the bustling Trichy-Chennai National Highway.
Urgent Demand to Prevent Fatal Accidents
During the meeting, Durai Vaiko emphasized that detailed project reports for the proposed VuPs at the Sanjeevi Nagar junction and Kollidam Y road junction in Srirangam have already been submitted to the regional officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He urged the ministry to facilitate swift approvals to eliminate the persistent risk of fatal accidents on this critical highway.
"Residents of nearby habitations, pedestrians, and daily commuters continue to face grave risk while crossing the highway. They persistently demand early commencement of works for the two VuPs," the MP stated in a formal letter submitted to Minister Malhotra. To underscore the urgency, he cited the tragic death of a 50-year-old special sub-inspector (SSI) of the Trichy city police at the Sanjeevi Nagar junction in January.
Project Delays and Local Concerns
Durai Vaiko revealed that cost estimates for the proposed underpasses have been meticulously prepared by an independent engineer and a road safety consultant. However, the latest update indicates that the bidding process for executing the works has not yet been finalized. "It is now more than two months since this update," the MP noted, expressing concern over the delay.
Local residents fear that the launch of these crucial projects might face further postponement once the election model code of conduct comes into effect. This apprehension adds to the pressing need for immediate action to safeguard public safety.
Additional Safety Measures Requested
In addition to the underpasses, the MP also urged Minister Malhotra to expedite administrative work for constructing an elevated rotary at the G Corner junction on the Trichy-Chennai National Highway. This measure is aimed at preventing accidents and improving traffic flow at this high-risk intersection.
The meeting highlights ongoing efforts to address infrastructure gaps and enhance road safety in Trichy, with Durai Vaiko pushing for timely interventions to protect commuters and residents alike.
