Trichy Mayor Reviews Fort Station Bridge, 70% Work Complete

Trichy: City mayor Mu Anbalagan on Thursday reviewed the construction work at the Fort station Road Over Bridge (RoB), also known as Maris RoB, on Salai Road. He announced that approximately 70% of the civic body's portion of the work has been completed.

Scope of Corporation's Work

The Trichy corporation's responsibilities include building retaining walls, approach roads, and abutments on the Sastri Road end and the Main guard gate end of the Fort station RoB. The mayor stated, “Soon after Southern Railway completes its portion of work, just above the railway tracks, we will expedite the approach road work to link the roads on either end of the new bridge to resume public movement.”

Railway Timeline

The Railways have planned to complete their portion by September. While the Trichy corporation is spending ₹34.1 crore on the new bridge, the railways have sanctioned ₹9.5 crore for a normal girder type RoB.

Features of the New Bridge

The new bridge will feature spacious two-lanes for bidirectional movement of vehicles, including heavy vehicles and city buses operated between Chathiram bus terminus and Woraiyur-Thillai Nagar destinations. The lanes will be wider than those on the old bridge.

Replacement for Old Structure

The new RoB is being built as a replacement for the more than 150-year-old bridge that was demolished last year due to its age. The bridge area has been closed for traffic since March 2024.
