Thaltej Lake Revival Project Finally Gets Formal Approval After 15-Year Delay
In a significant development for Ahmedabad's urban ecology, the long-stalled revival of Thaltej village lake has finally received formal approval from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). After remaining in administrative limbo for over fifteen years, the civic body has cleared the crucial first phase of this ambitious project, marking a major breakthrough for one of western Ahmedabad's largest natural water bodies.
Financial Sanction and Initial Development Plans
The AMC has sanctioned a substantial tender worth Rs 4.48 crore to kickstart the development works, as announced during Friday's standing committee meeting. This financial approval represents the first concrete step toward transforming the neglected lake into a properly developed urban water body. The initial phase will cover 84,819 square meters of lake land, focusing primarily on essential civil works including the construction of a comprehensive compound wall to secure the lake premises and clearly define its boundaries.
Historical Significance and Past Challenges
Located on Final Plot numbers 380 and 382, Thaltej village lake spans approximately 1.38 lakh square meters, making it comparable in both size and potential to prominent city lakes such as Vastrapur and Shilaj. Despite its significant ecological and recreational potential, the lake remained neglected for years due to multiple administrative hurdles. These challenges included persistent land record discrepancies, bureaucratic delays, and jurisdictional complications following Thaltej's merger into AMC limits, which collectively stalled development efforts for more than a decade and a half.
Encroachment Removal and Rehabilitation Strategy
The first phase of development will also prioritize addressing the sensitive issue of encroachments and illegal constructions on the lake bed. AMC has formulated a careful approach that includes rehabilitation measures before any structure removal. Standing committee chairman Devang Dani emphasized the civic body's commitment to humane solutions, stating, "We have planned alternative housing arrangements for families living on the lake land.
