Surat Municipal Corporation Approves Major Budget Expansion with Focus on Social Welfare

The Standing Committee of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has given its approval to a significantly enhanced draft budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. In a decisive move, the committee has incorporated additional projects valued at a substantial Rs 703 crore. This strategic augmentation elevates the total civic budget from an initial Rs 10,593 crore to a revised and more robust figure of Rs 11,301 crore.

Key Announcements and Welfare Measures Unveiled

Standing Committee Chairman Rajan Patel addressed the media on Saturday, detailing the finalized budget and outlining several pivotal initiatives designed to benefit the city's residents. The announcements underscore a strong commitment to social welfare and infrastructure development.

Property Tax Relief for Widows: In a compassionate decision aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, the committee has instituted a complete waiver of property tax for widows. To avail of this benefit, widows must simply submit a widow beneficiary card for properties registered in their names, thereby receiving full exemption from this financial obligation.

Enhanced Sanitation Grants: Recognizing the importance of community hygiene, the budget substantially increases sanitation grants allocated to approximately 1,160 city societies. This boost is expected to significantly improve cleanliness and public health standards across residential areas.

Transportation and Religious Infrastructure Initiatives

Free BRTS Travel for Senior Citizens: Chairman Rajan Patel announced a landmark initiative to make public transportation more accessible. Effective immediately, all senior citizens in Surat can travel completely free of charge on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). A dedicated budgetary provision has been established to support this measure, enhancing affordability and mobility for the elderly population.

Grant for Religious Institutions: For the first time, a grant of Rs 25 crore has been earmarked specifically for religious institutions within the city. This fund is intended to finance essential facilities and upgrades, including improvements to water supply systems, road infrastructure, installation of paver blocks, and the setup of solar panels at various religious sites.

The comprehensive budget revisions reflect the SMC's focused approach on addressing both immediate civic needs and long-term social welfare, positioning Surat for continued urban development and resident support in the coming fiscal year.
