Sahnewal Civic Body Launches Major Sewer Clean-Up Drive with Advanced Machines
The Municipal Council of Sahnewal has launched a comprehensive sewer cleaning operation to address persistent drainage issues that have plagued the town for years. This initiative involves the deployment of super suction-cum-jet machines, specifically designed to tackle severe blockages in narrow streets and tight spaces where manual tools and small jet pumps previously failed.
Addressing Long-Standing Sewer Woes
Executive Officer Balvir Singh of the Municipal Council of Sahnewal highlighted that residents have faced sewer accumulation problems, particularly in narrow lanes, for an extended period. "The existing infrastructure was not well equipped to handle the increased load of urbanisation," Singh explained. "Hence, we have arranged super suction machines to address the issue. The operation is currently underway, and we expect the majority of areas to be cleaned in the coming days."
The council is working round-the-clock to clear blockages based on severity in specific wards. Singh assured that the suction work will be completed within a few days, bringing much-needed relief to residents. Measures will also be implemented to prevent future blockages and ensure regular maintenance and inspections.
Impact on Residents and Local Response
For years, sewer accumulation has disrupted daily life in Sahnewal, with low-lying areas inundated even after light drizzle. Rainwater mixed with sewage flooded streets and entered homes, creating deplorable conditions. "Even in normal conditions, the streets used to turn into a pool of filthy garbage water," a resident lamented, noting that narrow streets exacerbated the problem.
Another resident expressed relief, stating, "We have been struggling with this for years. We welcome the initiative of the existing government, which has thought of pulling us out of this hell." They hope authorities complete the evacuation in all affected areas within the stipulated timeframe.
Political Support and Future Plans
Cabinet Minister and local MLA Hardeep Singh Mundian emphasized that past governments failed to address the sewer issues. "The machines have been especially arranged to tackle severe blockages, which were not possible manually," Mundian said. He pledged to oversee the work to ensure timely completion and relief for residents from sewer woes.
This drive marks a significant step in improving urban infrastructure and public health in Sahnewal, with ongoing efforts focused on sustainable solutions for the community.
