The Tamil Nadu government and the Union government signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. This agreement facilitates the release of Rs 2,177 crore as the first tranche of central funds for the extended phase of the rural drinking water scheme.
MoU Signing Ceremony
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who participated from Chennai via video conferencing, and Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, who joined from New Delhi. The agreement covers the extended implementation period of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 until December 2028.
First Phase Achievements
The first phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission was implemented between 2019 and 2024. Under this phase, Tamil Nadu provided 46.71 lakh functional household tap connections, benefiting 1.86 crore people, according to the state government.
Ongoing Projects
As part of the implementation, 45 new multi-village schemes, 56 retrofitting combined water supply schemes, and 21,258 single village schemes are currently under execution in the state.
Financial Outlay
The total approved outlay for the first phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission in Tamil Nadu was Rs 18,123 crore, of which the Union government's share was Rs 9,025 crore and the state government's contribution was Rs 9,097 crore.
Commitment to Sustainable Water Supply
The release stated that the extension of the scheme till 2028 reaffirms the commitment of both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to ensure safe, adequate, and sustainable drinking water supply to all rural households.
