National Highways Authority of India Intensifies Road Safety Campaigns in Tamil Nadu
In a concerted effort to bolster road safety awareness across Tamil Nadu, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) spearheaded a series of impactful initiatives in Madurai on Thursday, coinciding with the ongoing Road Safety Month. Simultaneously, in Trichy, local law enforcement recognized the commendable efforts of two college students who took innovative steps to promote traffic safety.
Madurai's Multi-Pronged Awareness Drive
At the bustling Kalavasal junction in Madurai, NHAI officials launched a comprehensive road safety campaign aimed at educating the public. The authorities distributed informative pamphlets to motorists and pedestrians, emphasizing the critical importance of adhering to fundamental safety protocols. Key messages focused on the mandatory use of helmets for two-wheeler riders, the necessity of wearing seatbelts in four-wheelers, and the imperative to follow prescribed speed limits while driving.
As part of this extensive drive, NHAI representatives also conducted an enlightening road safety awareness seminar at Queen Mira International School, located on Melakkal Road. This session aimed to instill safe road behavior from a young age, targeting students who are future road users. The event was graced by the presence of prominent officials, including Divisional Engineer Varalakshmi, along with Assistant Divisional Engineers Durairaju and Shanthini, underscoring the authority's commitment to the cause.
Trichy's Youth-Led Initiative Earns Police Acclaim
In a parallel development in Trichy, the district superintendent of police, Selvanagarathinam, publicly lauded two proactive college students for their grassroots road safety campaign. V S Anu Prasad and Naveen Balaji, students of St Joseph's College, demonstrated remarkable initiative by creating and distributing 200 ballpoint pens adorned with road safety stickers.
The stickers carried a compelling message: "Let's wear helmets — let's respect traffic rules." The students strategically distributed these pens to two-wheeler riders in key areas, including Thuraiyur and near the Theppakulam post office in Trichy. During their interactions, they commended riders who were already wearing helmets and politely urged those without helmets to adopt this life-saving practice.
Impressed by their dedication, SP Selvanagarathinam invited the students to his office, where he formally commended their efforts. He presented them with certificates of appreciation, highlighting how such community-driven initiatives significantly complement official road safety measures. This recognition not only celebrates the students' creativity but also encourages broader public participation in promoting road safety across the region.
These coordinated efforts in Madurai and Trichy reflect a growing emphasis on collaborative approaches to road safety, combining official drives with community engagement to reduce accidents and foster a culture of responsible driving in Tamil Nadu.
