Punjab Releases Rs 100 Crore for Flood Preparedness

Chandigarh: Hardeep Singh Mundian, Punjab minister for revenue, rehabilitation and disaster management, on Sunday said the state government had released a total of Rs 100 crore in advance to strengthen flood preparedness and ensure prompt response to any natural calamity across the state.

Anticipating the forthcoming monsoon season and potential flood-related challenges, the state government has taken proactive measures to equip all districts with adequate financial resources for disaster management and mitigation activities, said the minister.

Funds amounting to Rs 100 crore have already been released to all districts of Punjab for the financial year 2026-27, and an additional Rs 46 crore has been sanctioned for flood prevention and preparedness measures, he added.

Under this allocation, each district has been provided Rs 2 crore to meet requirements related to boats, flood-fighting equipment, rescue material and other essential resources needed to tackle any flood situation efficiently, Mundian elaborated.

The minister emphasized that the advance release of funds would enable district administrations to procure necessary equipment and materials well before the monsoon season. This proactive step aims to minimize damage and ensure the safety of citizens during potential floods.

Punjab has faced severe flooding in previous years, particularly in low-lying areas near rivers. The state government has been working on improving drainage systems and strengthening embankments. The additional funds will also support community awareness programs and emergency response training for local teams.
