Puducherry Unveils Major Road Infrastructure Overhaul Worth Rs 437 Crore
In a significant move to transform urban mobility, Puducherry has announced comprehensive road infrastructure projects totaling Rs 437 crore. Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan revealed these ambitious plans, describing them as a crucial step toward enhancing commuter experience and alleviating traffic congestion across the Union territory.
Four-Lane Flyover to Streamline Busy Junctions
A key component of this initiative is the construction of a four-lane flyover stretching approximately 4 kilometers. This elevated road will connect Indira Gandhi Square to Rajiv Gandhi Square and extend to Marapalam. The flyover is specifically designed to streamline traffic movement through some of Puducherry's most congested intersections, promising smoother transit for daily commuters and visitors alike.
New Arterial Road to Enhance East-West Connectivity
Another major project involves laying a new 13.5-kilometer four-lane arterial road from Ariyankuppam to Mullodai. This development is expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity within the region. By providing an alternative route, it will reduce pressure on existing city roads, which often experience heavy traffic during peak hours.
Road Widening for Integrated Traffic Flow
As part of the comprehensive makeover, existing roads leading up to Marapalam will be widened. This expansion aims to ensure smoother traffic flow and better integration with the upcoming flyover and arterial road network. The coordinated approach is intended to create a seamless transportation system that minimizes bottlenecks.
Union Government's Financial Support
The infrastructure projects will be implemented with substantial financial backing from the Union government, which has allocated Rs 437 crore for this purpose. This funding underscores the Centre's commitment to modernizing Puducherry's transport system and supporting its development as a key Union territory.
Boosting Tourism with World-Class Infrastructure
Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan emphasized Puducherry's global appeal, noting that it ranks second only to Toulouse in France in tourist preference. He highlighted the urgent need for world-class infrastructure to match this international reputation. Improving road, rail, and air connectivity is vital to support the town's growing tourism economy and enhance its attractiveness to both domestic and international visitors.
The road makeover initiative represents a strategic investment in Puducherry's future, aiming to transform traffic bottlenecks into efficient boulevards. By addressing congestion and improving connectivity, these projects are set to elevate the quality of life for residents while bolstering the region's economic and tourism prospects.
