Private Firm Takes Over KWA Operations in Kochi, Full Service Starts in Two Months
Private Firm Takes Over KWA Operations in Kochi

Suez Projects Private Ltd has officially taken charge of operating and maintaining the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) utilities in Kochi. The private firm now holds the responsibility for these critical services. However, residents will need to wait two more months before the company begins full operations. The firm requires this time to complete essential preparatory work.

Background of the Agreement

The state government and Suez Projects Private Ltd signed a formal agreement in November 2025. This agreement entrusted the firm with the operation and maintenance of KWA facilities across Kochi. Despite the signing, the firm did not immediately take over its responsibilities. The delay occurred because the government failed to make the full payment for the mobilization advance to the company.

Payment Resolution and Mobilization

This payment issue was resolved on December 27. On that date, the government disbursed Rs 41 crore to Suez Projects. This payment completed the full amount owed for the mobilization advance. With the financial hurdle cleared, the firm could proceed with assuming its duties.

KWA officials have confirmed that the private company has already established its office in Kochi. The firm has also begun mobilizing its staff and resources in the city. This setup phase is a crucial step before the commencement of full-scale operations.

Preparatory Work and Future Plans

During the next two months, Suez Projects will engage in significant preparatory activities. A key task involves conducting detailed topographical surveys. The firm will also carry out GIS mapping of all households and commercial units within the Kochi corporation limits.

This mapping exercise aims to create a comprehensive database. The database will assist both KWA and the private firm. It will contain detailed information on various aspects, including current customers and projections for future water demand.

Operational Responsibilities

Once operational, the firm will handle a range of critical maintenance and repair works. KWA officials have outlined the company's primary duties. Suez Projects will be responsible for addressing frequent pipe bursts across the city's network.

Furthermore, the company has a major infrastructure task ahead. It will undertake the replacement of all dilapidated and aging pipelines in Kochi. This work is essential for improving the reliability and efficiency of the city's water supply system.

The takeover marks a significant shift in the management of Kochi's water utilities. Residents and commercial users await the promised improvements in service delivery and infrastructure maintenance.
