Patna Bans Coaching at Gandhi Maidan, Cites Damage to Grounds
Patna bans physical training at Gandhi Maidan

In a decisive move to protect a key public space, the Patna divisional commissioner has imposed a complete and immediate ban on all organised physical training activities at the historic Gandhi Maidan. The order, announced on Tuesday, comes after a review revealed significant damage to the grounds caused by numerous coaching institutes and private instructors.

Grounds Damaged by Intensive Training

The decision followed a review meeting where officials highlighted that nearly 15 coaching institutes and private trainers had caused extensive harm to the Maidan. The intensive training routines, involving long jumps, sprints, and other exercises, have destroyed the grass cover and left the surface uneven. Divisional Commissioner Kumar Parashar directed the Shri Krishna Smarak Vikas Samiti to enforce the prohibition strictly and warned of legal action against any instructors violating the order.

Alternative Venue and Broader Clean-Up Drive

To ensure students preparing for competitive exams are not disadvantaged, the administration has suggested relocating these physical training activities to the Ganga Ghats, specifically Digha and Collectorate Ghat. Officials cited better air quality and a more suitable environment for exercise at these riverfront locations.

This is part of a larger initiative to revamp the Gandhi Maidan area. The commissioner also ordered the district transport officer to cancel permits of commercial vehicles that fail to stop at designated stands. "This move is aimed at curbing traffic congestion and accidents frequently reported around the Maidan area," stated Parashar.

Infrastructure and Security Upgrades

Simultaneously, a multi-departmental effort has been launched to improve the Maidan's infrastructure and safety. Key instructions include:

  • The building construction department will repair the walking tracks.
  • The forest department will plant medicinal and shade-giving trees along the perimeter.
  • All departments must maintain the existing 15 high-mast lights and 56 decorative lights that illuminate the grounds.

On the security front, 128 high-definition CCTV cameras, including analytic and PTZ models installed under the Patna Smart City project, are now fully operational. These cameras are monitored round-the-clock via the Integrated Command and Control Centre to enhance public safety in the area.
