Noida Authority Initiates Major Project to Designate Dog Feeding Zones
The Noida Authority has commenced a significant initiative to install boards marking designated dog feeding points throughout the city. This project aims to streamline the feeding of stray dogs and mitigate conflicts in both residential and commercial areas. The public health department is implementing this Rs 1.2 crore endeavor, which will initially cover multiple locations in Phase-1 sectors. Officials have confirmed that the work is scheduled for completion within a six-month timeframe.
Second Tender Issued Under Comprehensive City-Wide Plan
A senior official disclosed that this represents the second tender issued under the broader project. Previously, a similar tender worth Rs 1.3 crore had been issued, with both tenders collectively covering the entire city. "With this round, the remaining sectors will be brought under the plan," the official stated, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the initiative.
Supreme Court Directive Spurs Local Action
This move follows a Supreme Court order dated August 22, 2025, which directed local civic bodies to establish dedicated feeding zones for community dogs. The court observed that unregulated feeding often leads to inconvenience and untoward incidents, clarifying that feeding must occur only at designated locations to maintain order and safety.
Extensive Planning and Survey Underway
In September 2025, the Authority announced plans to develop approximately 1,200 designated feeding points at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore. SP Singh, the then general manager of public health, highlighted that a city-wide survey would be conducted to identify suitable sites. This survey involves consultation with apartment owners' associations and residents' welfare associations, particularly in areas with high stray dog density.
Singh explained, "For now, the focus is on identifying safe, permanent locations where dogs can be fed without creating nuisance or safety risks. This will help regulate their movement, reduce group gatherings in colonies, and improve overall cleanliness."
Addressing Noida's Stray Dog Population and Past Incidents
Noida is home to an estimated 30,000 stray dogs and boasts four new small veterinary hospitals, along with a larger facility in Sector 94 that has been operational for over three decades. Last year, reports surfaced of incidents involving residents' welfare associations and dog feeders, including a case in September where a resident of Sector 75 was detained overnight for chasing a dog feeder with a stick and issuing threats.
Infrastructure and Community Responsibility
Officials clarified that the Authority's role is to create basic infrastructure and install signboards clearly marking the feeding zones. Maintenance and day-to-day monitoring will eventually be transitioned to residents, fostering community involvement in the initiative.
Expected Benefits of Designated Feeding Points
Once completed, the marked feeding points are anticipated to deliver multiple benefits:
- Bring uniformity to feeding practices across the city.
- Reduce friction between residents and animal feeders.
- Improve waste management in neighbourhoods by centralizing feeding activities.
This project represents a proactive step towards harmonizing urban living with animal welfare, in compliance with judicial directives and community needs.
