Noida Metro Aqua Line Experiences Spectacular 442% Ridership Surge Since Launch
The Aqua Line of the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has demonstrated an extraordinary growth trajectory, with daily ridership skyrocketing by approximately 442% since its inauguration. This vital transit corridor, which links Sector 51 in Noida to Depot Station in Greater Noida, has evolved into a cornerstone of urban mobility for the region.
From Humble Beginnings to Record-Breaking Numbers
When the Aqua Line commenced operations on January 25, 2019, it served a modest 11,625 commuters daily. Fast forward to January 2026, and the average daily ridership has surged to an impressive 63,079 passengers. This represents one of the most significant public transport success stories in the National Capital Region.
Spanning 29 kilometers with 21 strategically located stations, the Aqua Line serves as an essential transportation lifeline for thousands of workers employed in corporate offices and residential sectors across Noida and Greater Noida. The line's comprehensive coverage has made it indispensable for daily commuters.
The Gradual Ascent to Popularity
Despite a slow start immediately following its inauguration, the Aqua Line began gaining momentum by March 2020, when average ridership climbed to 17,032. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily disrupted this upward trend, but when services resumed in September 2020, ridership embarked on a steady and consistent recovery.
The growth accelerated significantly in 2022, with peak ridership reaching 43,430 commuters in November of that year. This positive trajectory culminated in September 2025, when the Aqua Line achieved its highest-ever monthly ridership, boasting an average daily count of 74,370 passengers. This remarkable spike was largely attributed to the UP International Trade Show held in the city during that period, which attracted substantial visitor traffic.
Addressing Connectivity Challenges and Future Expansion
While ridership numbers tell a story of success, connectivity between the Sector 51 and Sector 52 stations remains a persistent concern for local residents. The Noida Authority is actively developing a skywalk to bridge this gap, though the project has encountered delays. Originally scheduled for completion by February 1, the initiative has been slowed due to complications involving a pillar near the entrance at Sector 52 station.
An official familiar with the project confirmed that efforts are underway to remove the obstructive pillar, but no revised deadline for the skywalk's inauguration has been announced yet.
Looking toward the future, NMRC has ambitious plans to extend the Aqua Line's reach through three proposed corridors:
- Extension from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park V
- Extension from Sector 51 to Sector 142
- Extension from Depot Station to Boraki
The detailed project reports for the first two extensions are currently awaiting approval from the central government. Meanwhile, the Depot Station to Boraki extension has recently received the green light, with tenders expected to be issued shortly for corridor development.
