The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity by submitting a comprehensive Rs 290-crore proposal to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This ambitious plan seeks approval to widen and strengthen a crucial nine-kilometer stretch of the Nashik–Pune highway, specifically from Dwarka junction to Nashik Road.
Preparing for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela
As part of meticulous preparations for the upcoming 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the civic body has proposed transforming the existing four-lane road into a modern six-lane corridor. This expansion is strategically designed to accommodate the anticipated surge in traffic during the mega religious event, which attracts millions of devotees from across the country and beyond.
Positive Response from NHAI Officials
A senior civic official, while discussing the matter with TOI, revealed that initial indications from the NHAI suggest a positive response toward permitting the NMC to undertake these critical widening and strengthening works on this vital urban stretch of the national highway. The official elaborated, "The project will include white-topping of the entire stretch, in addition to increasing the road width from 4 to 6 lanes, provided the civic body receives final approval along with funding."
Addressing Congestion on a Busy Corridor
The Dwarka–Nashik Road corridor stands as one of the busiest routes in the region, facilitating the movement of thousands of vehicles daily. It serves as a major link not only for intra-city commuters but also for heavy traffic headed toward Pune and Shirdi, as well as numerous industrial estates in Sinnar. The high density of commercial establishments along the route further exacerbates congestion, making road widening a longstanding and urgent public demand.

Once upgraded, the corridor is projected to double its traffic-handling capacity, significantly easing routine bottlenecks that plague daily commuters and commercial transporters alike. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri confirmed the development, stating, "We are planning the widening and strengthening of the Dwarka–Nashik Road stretch in the city to improve traffic movement. The NHAI showed positive intent, and we expect further progress soon." She added that cabinet minister Girish Mahajan held a telephonic discussion with senior NHAI officials to push the proposal forward, underscoring the importance of completing road infrastructure upgrades ahead of the Kumbh Mela.
