In a significant move to prepare for the massive influx of devotees, authorities have announced the construction of a large-scale water filtration plant at the sacred Kushavart Teerth in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik. This project is a cornerstone of the infrastructure development for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, scheduled to be held in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar from 2026 to 2028.
Key Infrastructure for Sacred Bathing
The decision to install the new plant directly addresses the anticipated bathing needs of millions of sadhus and pilgrims. Kumbh Mela commissioner Shekhar Singh recently visited the Teerth site to review the preparatory work, as confirmed by a senior officer from the state's Water Resources Department (WRD). The primary function of this facility will be to ensure a steady supply of clean water for the ritual baths that form the spiritual core of the mega event.
The officer highlighted the scale of the requirement, stating that the new plant will have the capacity to treat over 3 lakh litres of water every hour. This massive output is crucial given the existing daily footfall at Trimbakeshwar, which sees about 80,000 visitors, with nearly 20,000 taking a holy dip. These numbers are expected to swell exponentially during the Kumbh period.
Managing the Pilgrim Surge
Crowd management and safety are paramount concerns for the administration. The officer pointed out that during the Kumbh Mela, the number of pilgrims bathing at the Teerth can skyrocket to an astonishing 6 lakh (600,000) devotees. To systematically handle this surge, a standardized framework for evaluating the ghats (bathing steps) is being implemented.
Government agencies have been instructed to conduct a detailed assessment of all usable ghats along the river. This includes:
- Identifying every ghat that can be safely accessed.
- Measuring their precise dimensions and physical layout.
- Calculating their exact capacity to hold devotees at any single moment.
This data-driven approach aims to create a robust plan for safety and efficient crowd management, preventing overcrowding and ensuring a smooth experience for all attendees.
