NDMC Pioneers CNG-Powered Road Sweeping in Delhi to Tackle Dust Pollution
In a landmark initiative for urban cleanliness, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has introduced five new CNG-operated mechanical road sweepers, marking the first deployment of such eco-friendly technology by any civic body in the capital. This strategic move aligns with NDMC's broader commitment to transitioning its fleet towards cleaner, compressed natural gas (CNG) based vehicles, as outlined in its recent budget announcements.
Enhancing Cleaning Efficiency and Air Quality
The council currently operates four diesel-powered mechanical sweepers, but the addition of these five CNG units represents a significant upgrade. NDMC Vice-Chairman Kuljeet Chahal emphasized the critical role of these machines, stating, "Mechanical road sweepers are essential for reducing road dust, which directly improves air quality and ensures safer streets for pedestrians and motorists." He highlighted that NDMC conducts mechanized sweeping on major roads during both day and night shifts to maintain cleanliness.
Chahal further explained that the new CNG sweepers will help NDMC achieve its ambitious target of sweeping approximately 415 kilometers of roads daily. This is particularly crucial in the high-security and high-footfall VVIP areas under NDMC's jurisdiction, where maintaining pristine conditions is a priority. The procurement of these five additional units was deemed essential to effectively control dust pollution and enhance urban hygiene.
Compliance with Environmental Regulations
The shift to CNG-operated sweepers is in direct response to National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders, which prohibit the registration of new diesel vehicles in Delhi to curb air pollution. By adopting this technology, NDMC not only complies with these regulations but also sets a precedent for other municipal bodies in the city. "With this initiative, NDMC has become the first civic body in Delhi to procure mechanical road sweepers mounted on a CNG chassis," Chahal noted, underscoring the council's leadership in sustainable urban management.
The investment in these five machines amounted to about Rs 3.71 crore, reflecting NDMC's commitment to allocating resources towards environmentally friendly infrastructure. Officials have pointed out several benefits of the new sweepers:
- Faster and more efficient cleaning operations
- Reduced risk of accidents by promptly removing debris from roads
- Significant savings in time and manpower
- An eco-friendly and hygienic solution for urban waste management
Night-Time Operations for Cleaner Mornings
To ensure residents wake up to clean and dust-free streets every morning, NDMC has already implemented night-time wet cleaning and sweeping operations across its areas. Chahal elaborated, "Our night-time efforts are crucial in maintaining the aesthetic and health standards of the city, complementing the daytime activities of the new CNG sweepers." This round-the-clock approach demonstrates NDMC's holistic strategy to combat pollution and enhance the quality of life in New Delhi.
The introduction of CNG-powered mechanical road sweepers is a proactive step towards addressing Delhi's persistent air quality challenges. By replacing diesel with cleaner CNG fuel, NDMC not only reduces carbon emissions but also minimizes the release of particulate matter that contributes to respiratory issues. This initiative is part of a larger push towards sustainable mobility and urban cleanliness, positioning NDMC as a model for other municipalities in India and beyond.
