The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a major offensive against potholes and damaged roads, accelerating a city-wide asphalting drive with a clear deadline. The civic body aims to resurface a total of 53 kilometers of road stretches by December 31, transforming Nagpur into a smoother and more commuter-friendly city.
Rapid Progress Across Key Zones
Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari and the technical supervision of Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, the project has already seen significant progress. The Hotmix Plant Department has completed resurfacing work on approximately 10 kilometers of roads across four major municipal zones: Dharampeth, Dhantoli, Hanuman Nagar, and Gandhibagh. This work covers 51 individual roads, both small and large.
To ensure durability and standardization, the NMC is utilizing its modernized hotmix plant. The initiative follows a comprehensive survey that identified the 53-kilometer priority network across all ten zones of the city.
Zone-Wise Breakdown of Completed Work
In Dharampeth Zone, residents can now enjoy smoother rides on stretches from Vandana Apartment to Kalpana Apartment in Ramdaspeth, around the Chhoti Dhantoli garden, and from Ramnagar to Pandharabodi.
Dhantoli Zone's Ward 35 has seen asphalting at Navnath Society, RTO Society, and Mahalaxmi Society. Roads inside Indian Housing Society, Mangalam Society, Shilpa Society, and the Shani Mandir area are also complete.
Hanuman Nagar Zone witnessed extensive improvements, with completed stretches including:
- Snehshree Apartment to Shri Ram Plaza
- Ganesh Mandir to Nagoba Mandir
- Samag Apartment to Shriram Sankul Municipal School
- Samag Apartment to the Bute residence
- Pranay General Store to Pradeep Kirana
- Mata Mandir to Pranay General Stores
- Hakim Hardware to Makode Mutton Shop
Several internal link roads, such as Tathagat Buddhavihar Road and the stretch from Anand Public School to Shri Kirana, have also been resurfaced.
In Gandhibagh Zone, the significant six-lane DP Road from Gangabai Ghat to Kumbhar Toli Chowk in Ward 22 is now fully resurfaced. Work continues on the busy Vishwakarma – Mayo Hospital Metro Station – Mominpura stretch.
Coordinated Efforts for Minimal Disruption
Understanding that large-scale civic work can cause public inconvenience, the NMC has taken proactive steps. The Hotmix Department is coordinating closely with the Nagpur City Traffic Police for systematic traffic management during the work.
Furthermore, personnel from the NMC's Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) have been deployed at work sites. Their role is to monitor the execution and ensure that disruptions for citizens are kept to an absolute minimum.
To meet the ambitious year-end target, the department is operating at full capacity. Executive Engineer Ajay Dahake stated that the plant is producing nearly 300 metric tonnes of asphalt daily, facilitating the resurfacing of road sections with 20 to 22 truckloads each day. This pace has given the corporation confidence that most of the remaining work will be completed well within the scheduled deadline of December 31.
