Nagpur: MahaMetro has barricaded a section of the road between Freedom Park Metro Station (Morris College T-Point) and Institute of Science College (DP Road) as part of tunnel construction that will extend to Manas Chowk. This closure, combined with ongoing concretisation of Wardha Road, is expected to increase traffic pressure near Zero Mile, which already experiences heavy vehicular movement.
Tunnel Project Details
The foundation for the 870-metre-long tunnel, stretching from Manas Chowk to the Institute of Science via Freedom Park Metro Station, was laid on October 14, 2024. A public interest litigation concerning the project is pending before the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court.
Traffic Diversion Plan
The Nagpur police traffic branch announced diversions effective from June 4, 2026, to July 3, 2026. The work, carried out by M/s YFC & BBG Projects, is expected to last one year. To manage heavy traffic and prevent accidents, the following measures have been introduced:
- Traffic from Freedom Park Metro Station towards Institute of Science College will be diverted via Variety Square and Maharajbagh Square.
- Alternatively, motorists can turn left from Zero Mile and use Forest Office Road to reach Institute of Science Square.
- Vehicles moving from Institute of Science College towards Freedom Park Metro Station will be diverted through Maharajbagh Square and Variety Square.
- Another alternative route is via Board Office Square, Forest Office Road, and Zero Mile to reach Morris College Square.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar urged motorists to follow the diversion routes and cooperate with traffic police to minimise inconvenience.
