Mysuru RTO to Launch Automated Vehicle Fitness Testing from Mid-February

Transport authorities in Mysuru will scrap the manual process of issuing fitness certificates to new vehicles starting from mid-February. They will roll out Automated Testing Centres to perform this work instead. This move aims to streamline procedures and cut delays for vehicle owners.

Automated Testing Centres to Begin Operations Soon

Vasanth Chauhan, the Regional Transport Officer for Mysuru West, announced the development on Tuesday. He confirmed that the Automated Testing Centre in the city will start functioning within a month. Initially, the facility will handle fitness certificates for new vehicles. Later, authorities plan to extend its services to older vehicles as well.

The National Highways Authority of India issued an order mandating this change. Transport offices under the jurisdiction of an established Automated Testing Centre must now renew transport vehicle fitness certificates at these centres. This directive ensures uniform implementation across regions.

Quick Assessment and Online Services

Chauhan explained that the Automated Testing Centre will assess a vehicle's condition within just five minutes before issuing the fitness certificate. This rapid process contrasts sharply with the older manual methods that often caused lengthy waits.

The transport department already offers twenty-six RTO-related services online. Vehicle owners can complete many tasks without visiting offices. To further improve customer convenience, the department is gradually amending provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and related rules.

Chauhan highlighted specific online services available through dedicated software platforms. All services related to driving licences and learner licences are accessible online via the Sarathi software. Similarly, services like transfer of ownership, address change, tax payment, instalment agreement, and cancellation are available through the Vahan software.

Vehicle owners can update mobile numbers, submit applications using Aadhaar OTP, upload documents, and pay fees online. These digital options reduce physical visits and paperwork.

Vehicle Statistics and Registration Clarifications

Mysuru has approximately 12.1 lakh registered vehicles, including 55,000 transport vehicles. The RTO West office registers around 3,000 two-wheelers and 1,200 new cars every month on average.

Responding to complaints, the RTO clarified the "BH" registration facility. This all-India validity registration is available only to Central government employees in transferable jobs. The clarification addresses public queries about eligibility.

Temporary Fee Payment Arrangement

To prevent inconvenience during an ongoing software upgrade, vehicle owners must pay prescribed fees at the Regional Transport Office in Mandya. This temporary measure ensures smooth transactions until the upgrade completes.

Road Safety Awareness Initiatives

Meanwhile, the transport department has lined up various programmes this month to educate road users. These activities are part of road safety awareness month. The department aims to promote safer driving practices and reduce accidents through these efforts.
