Mysuru Takes Lead in Mentoring Civic Bodies for Enhanced Waste Management
In a significant step towards promoting urban cleanliness, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has embarked on a mentoring role for Raichur City Corporation and Maski Town Panchayat. This initiative focuses on solid waste management, aiming to elevate the standards of municipal hygiene across Karnataka.
Formalizing the Partnership Through MoU
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been officially signed between MCC and the two municipal bodies. This agreement is part of the Union government's Swachh Shehar Jodi initiative, designed to foster collaboration between cities. Under this program, mentee civic bodies like Raichur and Maski gain the opportunity to learn and replicate the best practices from higher-ranked cities on the national cleanliness index.
Mysuru's Recognition in the Super Swachh League
Mysuru's selection as a mentor is backed by its impressive track record in cleanliness. Last year, the city earned a place in the Super Swachh League (SSL), a newly introduced category under the Swachh Survekshan conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Mysuru joined the ranks of cities such as Chandigarh and Noida in this elite group, recognized for top performance in previous Swachh Survekshan surveys.
Comprehensive Training for Officials
As part of the Swachh Shehar Jodi project, the first batch of officials from Raichur and Maski recently visited Mysuru for an intensive training session. During their stay, they were educated on various critical aspects of urban cleanliness, including:
- The importance of the annual Swachh Shehar Jodi survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
- Key parameters such as waste management, visual cleanliness of public spaces and streets, and citizen feedback mechanisms.
- Best practices in waste management, emphasizing the reduce-reuse-recycle mantra for city-generated waste.
- Advanced topics like dumpsite remediation, used water management, and handling of faecal sludge.
- Safety protocols, training programs, and social security measures for sanitation and civic workers.
Insights from MCC Leadership
MCC commissioner Syed Asif Tanveer highlighted the collaborative effort, stating that MCC officials provided training to representatives from Raichur and Maski. He emphasized the sharing of best practices adopted by Mysuru for effective waste management measures, underscoring the city's commitment to supporting other municipalities in their cleanliness endeavors.
This mentoring initiative not only strengthens inter-city cooperation but also aligns with broader national goals of achieving sustainable urban development and enhanced public health through improved waste management systems.
