Mumbai Power Outage: Western Suburbs Hit for 1.5-2 Hours

Major Power Outage Disrupts Life Across Mumbai's Western Suburbs

A significant power failure struck several neighborhoods in Mumbai's western suburbs on Tuesday evening, plunging numerous areas into darkness for nearly 1.5 to 2 hours. The outage, which began around 7 pm, affected thousands of consumers and triggered widespread inconvenience across residential and commercial zones.

Widespread Impact Across Multiple Locations

The disruption primarily impacted Adani Electricity consumers in key areas including Andheri Lokhandwala, parts of Juhu, and Santacruz, where residents reported prolonged power loss. The affected zones extended to include:

  • Bandra
  • Khar
  • Versova
  • Jogeshwari
  • Oshiwara
  • Goregaon
  • Malad

Social media platforms were flooded with complaints from frustrated residents seeking urgent restoration of electricity services. Many expressed surprise at the scale of the disruption, with one user noting, "The Mumbai that saw zero power cuts has changed… the entire Lokhandwala complex and market is out."

Technical Failure Triggers Network Protection Systems

According to an Adani Electricity official, the power interruption resulted from a rare technical failure that activated network protection systems. The company stated that restoration teams were deployed immediately without delay.

"Around 50% of supply was restored within 30 minutes, and about 90% within 60 minutes," the official explained, highlighting the rapid response efforts undertaken to minimize disruption.

Tata Power Consumers Also Affected

The outage also impacted Tata Power changeover consumers who receive supply through Adani Electricity lines in parts of the suburbs. However, a senior Tata Power official clarified that only a limited number of their consumers experienced disruption, suggesting the problem was primarily confined to the Adani network infrastructure.

Serious Consequences for Vulnerable Residents

The power failure posed significant risks to vulnerable residents, with one consumer highlighting a medical emergency on social media. "Kindly resolve at the earliest. Senior citizen on oxygen at home," the tweet read, underscoring how sudden outages can endanger those dependent on electrical medical equipment.

In Malad, the blackout had cascading effects as electric pumps stopped functioning, disrupting water supply in several buildings. Many residents found themselves unable to access stored water, compounding the inconvenience caused by the electricity failure.

Political Response and Public Concern

Congress Mumbai chief and MP Varsha Gaikwad addressed the situation on social media, stating, "This is a rare occurrence in Mumbai. I hope proper investigation is undertaken to determine the cause so it doesn't recur again." She also expressed hope that alternative power sources had been provided to emergency services like hospitals.

The incident has raised questions about infrastructure reliability, with residents expressing concern about the frequency and duration of such outages. One social media post claimed, "Major power failure in #Andheri, #DNNgr, and #Versova by @Adani_Elec_Mum, but residents with @TataPower are enjoying their evening," highlighting perceived disparities in service reliability between different providers.

The widespread disruption serves as a reminder of Mumbai's vulnerability to infrastructure failures and the critical importance of reliable power supply for urban living, particularly for medical emergencies and essential services.
