The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is currently engaged in a large-scale transformation of the city's road network, with concretisation work actively progressing on hundreds of arterial and local streets. According to the latest data from the civic dashboard, as of December 2, the public works department has taken up concretisation on a substantial 677 roads, which together span a total length of 308 kilometres across various neighbourhoods of Mumbai.
Project Status: Completed, Partial, and Pending Roads
This ongoing initiative is part of the civic body's ambitious mega concretisation project, which encompasses a grand total of 2,121 roads identified for upgrade. The dashboard reveals a detailed breakdown of the current status. To date, work on 790 roads has been fully completed, providing Mumbaikars with smoother and more durable surfaces. Meanwhile, construction on another 575 roads is in a partially completed stage. On the remaining 756 roads, the physical work of concretisation has not yet commenced.
Municipal officials have adopted a phased approach to manage this city-wide infrastructure overhaul. They have clarified that any new road works will be taken up for concretisation only after the ongoing stretches on the current list are significantly finished. This strategy aims to minimise prolonged disruption in any single area and ensure systematic completion.
Officials Aim for January Completion for Current Phase
Providing an update on the project's timeline, Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, who heads the BMC's roads department, stated that the concretisation works have been ongoing continuously since October across the metropolis. He highlighted that many of the roads which were in the partially completed category have been taken up for work in the current phase.
"Many of the roads which were partially completed have been taken up now and should be significantly finished by January, only after which any new roads shall be taken," Bangar explained. This indicates that residents can expect a major push in the coming weeks to wrap up the ongoing work on the 575 partially completed roads, with the goal of achieving substantial completion by the start of the new year.
