Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) officially launched the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' on Monday at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl. The initiative aims to combat soil degradation by promoting balanced, soil test-based fertilizer use and encouraging natural farming practices across the state.
Concerns Over Chemical Fertilizers
Addressing the gathering, the Governor expressed concern about the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which he stated have negatively impacted farmland and human health. He called for urgent measures to protect agricultural land in Mizoram. The Governor highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national mission on natural farming and stressed the need for a gradual transition to natural farming to safeguard the environment and enhance produce quality. He emphasized the importance of soil testing to identify nutrient deficiencies and ensure appropriate crop nourishment. He also urged agricultural scientists and experts to support farmers in adopting sustainable practices.
Role of Agriculture in Mizoram
Noting that Mizoram remains heavily dependent on agriculture, General Singh stated that dedicated efforts by experts and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) could help the state achieve food self-sufficiency while improving farmers' incomes. He observed that Mizoram's agricultural output is shaped by continued jhum cultivation on hilly terrain, where maintaining soil nutrient balance is challenging. The Governor called for continuous farmer training in modern scientific techniques, stronger market linkages for agricultural produce, and a greater focus on healthy, high-value organic crops.
Support from Agricultural Institutions
Anupam Mishra, Vice Chancellor of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, said the programme should reduce energy consumption in foodgrain production. He noted that the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' would create awareness about central schemes and ensure their effective implementation. Mishra highlighted the role of Soil Health Cards, Kisan Credit Cards, Farmers' IDs, and crop insurance in supporting farmers.
Event Highlights
Earlier, Lalnuntluangi Hmar, Dean of the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (CVSc&AH), Selesih, in Aizawl, delivered the welcome address. Students presented a skit on the campaign's importance. The vote of thanks was proposed by KP Chaudhary, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Aizawl. Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister PC Vanlalruata, officials from line departments, and farmers attended the event.
Campaign Objectives
Under the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan', the state will place special emphasis on reducing the overuse of chemical fertilizers, particularly urea. Through June, agricultural scientists, KVK officials, and state representatives will hold seminars and field demonstrations to train farmers in sustainable practices. The campaign will promote green manuring, bio-fertilizers, and organic nutrient sources, and help farmers access targeted government programmes to improve soil health and agricultural productivity.
