The Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Shelly Oberoi, has issued a strong directive to crack down on poor sanitation across the national capital. In a meeting held on Tuesday, she expressed serious concern over the deteriorating cleanliness situation in many areas and warned of strict action against officials and contractors found negligent in their duties.
Mayor's Directives
Mayor Oberoi emphasized that the MCD must ensure timely collection and disposal of garbage. She instructed all zonal officials to intensify inspections and take immediate corrective measures in areas with poor sanitation. The Mayor also directed that a special team be formed to monitor the cleanliness status in all 12 zones of the MCD and submit daily reports.
Actions Against Negligence
The Mayor warned that any contractor failing to meet the cleanliness standards would face termination of contract and legal action. Similarly, MCD officials found guilty of dereliction of duty would face disciplinary proceedings. She also called for a review of the existing waste management system and proposed the use of technology to improve efficiency.
Public Cooperation
In her statement, Mayor Oberoi appealed to Delhi residents to cooperate with the MCD in maintaining cleanliness. She urged citizens to segregate waste at source and avoid littering in public places. The MCD has also planned awareness campaigns in residential colonies to educate people about proper waste disposal.
The crackdown comes amid growing complaints from residents about overflowing dustbins and uncollected garbage in several parts of the city. The MCD has faced criticism for its poor handling of solid waste management, leading to health and environmental hazards.
With these measures, the MCD aims to improve the city's cleanliness and ensure a healthier environment for its citizens. The Mayor's office will review the progress in a follow-up meeting scheduled for next week.
