The Maharashtra government has launched a major mission to eliminate railway level crossings across the state, with 65 projects cleared in the first phase. The initiative, led by MahaRail, aims to phase out 131 level crossings that have Train Vehicle Unit (TVU) traffic exceeding 10,000, prioritizing safety and reducing accidents.
Phase One Projects
In the initial phase, 65 projects have been approved for construction of road overbridges or underpasses to replace dangerous level crossings. These crossings are located in high-traffic areas where the risk of collisions between trains and vehicles is significant.
Safety and Efficiency
Eliminating level crossings is expected to improve road safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance train operations. The move comes after several accidents at unmanned crossings prompted the state to take swift action.
MahaRail has identified a total of 131 crossings for elimination, with the remaining 66 to be cleared in subsequent phases. The government has allocated funds and set timelines for each project to ensure timely completion.
Public Response
Local residents and commuters have welcomed the initiative, hoping it will prevent future tragedies. The state government has urged cooperation from all stakeholders to expedite the process.
