New Delhi: Several roads connecting key roundabouts in Lutyens' Delhi are set to witness infrastructure upgrades, including installation of iron grilles, fresh road markings, redesigned bus stops, and repair of potholes.
NDMC Takes Action on Traffic Issues
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to address 19 infrastructure and traffic management issues flagged by Delhi Traffic Police in central and south Delhi following a survey in April. Officials said the civic body had set June 15 as the deadline. "The process of preparing estimates is underway," an official stated.
Key Locations Identified
The Delhi Cantonment traffic circle highlighted the absence or inadequacy of iron grilles along central verges on Parade Road and Thimayya Marg, while the construction of dedicated bus bays was recommended at several locations, including near Dhaula Kuan and Murti Marg. The Chanakyapuri traffic circle was marked as a major congestion hotspot, mainly due to poorly designed bus stops on Sardar Patel Marg and Shantipath.
Roundabout Congestion Issues
Congestion near the Kautilya roundabout was attributed to insufficient road width. Issues were also identified at multiple roundabouts, including Q-Point at Man Singh Road, near Taj ManSingh Hotel at the Shahjahan Road-Man Singh Road junction, and at the roundabout connecting Prithviraj Road with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Road.
Challenges for Structural Changes
An official, however, said, "Making structural changes to the roundabouts is not feasible immediately due to factors such as physical space constraints, mature trees, underground utilities, and roadside infrastructure."
