Lucknow Municipal Corporation Launches Comprehensive Clean Ward Competition
The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has officially launched an ambitious citywide 'Clean Ward Competition' initiative, marking the beginning of a focused and intensive cleanliness drive across all 110 municipal wards. The program was inaugurated on Monday by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal at Vrindavan Yojana, with residents, corporators, and civic officials in attendance.
Campaign Details and Evaluation Framework
Mayor Kharkwal emphasized that this campaign is crucial for enhancing Lucknow's national sanitation standing, announcing that the competition will run from February 17 to February 28. Each ward will be rigorously evaluated based on 12 specific parameters designed to ensure measurable, grassroots-level improvements rather than mere symbolic compliance.
Following a week of preparatory work, municipal teams will conduct thorough field inspections. The comprehensive evaluation criteria include:
- Source segregation of waste
- Home and community composting initiatives
- Efficient door-to-door collection systems
- Effective curbs on single-use plastic
- Proper maintenance of public toilets
- Regular drain and sewer cleaning
- Organization of zero-waste events
- Implementation of IEC awareness activities
- Clearance of garbage vulnerable points
- Maintenance of clean back lanes
- Establishment of Swachh Sarathi Clubs in educational institutions
- Active participation of environment promotion committees
Strategic Goals and Recognition
Wards will receive scores for each parameter, with top performers being recognized and awarded. Mayor Kharkwal stated, "Lucknow currently ranks 3rd nationally in cleanliness but aims to secure the top position. The corporators, sanitation workers, and officials are treating this campaign as a mission."
Community Engagement and Launch Events
Prior to the official launch, a cleanliness awareness rally took place, moving from Vrindavan Yojana Road to the main venue. The rally featured enthusiastic participation from residents, youth, and sanitation staff, who raised slogans and carried placards promoting cleanliness awareness.
The launch event was attended by Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar, senior civic officials, and representatives from Lion Enviro Agency, demonstrating broad institutional support for this important civic initiative.
