KSPCB Takes Action Against High-Rise Apartments and Academy
The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued notices to six apartment complexes and an academy located near Electronics City in Bengaluru. The action comes in response to the severe strain placed on the local drainage system due to increased sewage generation and water demand from these high-rise buildings.
Details of the Notice
According to KSPCB officials, the notices were served on June 21, 2026, following complaints from local residents about overflowing drains and foul odors in the area. The apartments and the academy have been given 15 days to respond and comply with pollution control norms.
Impact on Local Infrastructure
The surge in demand for water from these high-rise apartments, coupled with increased sewage output, has overwhelmed the existing drainage infrastructure. “The drainage system was not designed to handle such volumes,” a KSPCB official stated. The board has directed the entities to install sewage treatment plants (STPs) and reduce water consumption.
Response from the Apartments and Academy
Representatives of the apartments and the academy have expressed willingness to comply. “We are committed to resolving this issue and will work with KSPCB to implement necessary measures,” said a spokesperson for one of the apartment complexes.
Broader Context
This is not an isolated incident. Bengaluru has been grappling with water and sewage management issues due to rapid urbanization. KSPCB has been actively monitoring high-rise buildings and commercial establishments to ensure compliance with environmental norms.
