Kolkata Water Supply Disruption: South Kolkata to Face Dry Spell on Saturday

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has announced a significant water supply shutdown affecting a large portion of south Kolkata this Saturday. The Garden Reach water treatment plant will be temporarily closed to facilitate essential repair work and pipeline interconnection activities in high-diameter water pipes.

Extensive Maintenance and Upgrade Operations

According to officials from the KMC water supply department, the civic body will suspend water supply from the Garden Reach waterworks after 10 am on Saturday. The supply is scheduled to be restored at 6 am on Sunday. This shutdown is part of a comprehensive maintenance initiative that includes the installation of major water valves and electromechanical drives, alongside regular upkeep tasks.

The KMC water supply department has also undertaken repairs of leakages in major pipelines. Additionally, the installation of high-voltage motors and electrical appliances is being carried out to ensure uninterrupted water supply during the peak summer months, addressing potential future disruptions.

Affected Areas and Impact on Residents

KMC water supply department sources confirmed that there will be no supply of filtered water from the Garden Reach water treatment plant to entire Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, and Garia. Water supply will also be impacted in parts of Chetla, Kalighat, Rashbehari, Kasba, Garfa, Dhakuria, Golf Green, and some areas adjacent to EM Bypass.

Residents in these localities are advised to store adequate water in advance to mitigate the effects of the temporary shutdown. The KMC's proactive measures aim to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the water supply infrastructure, though they necessitate this short-term inconvenience.

Preparations and Community Response

The timing of the shutdown, from Saturday morning to Sunday early morning, is designed to minimize disruption during weekdays. However, residents and businesses in the affected areas should prepare for a dry period and plan their water usage accordingly.

This maintenance work underscores the ongoing efforts by the KMC to upgrade and maintain critical water supply systems in Kolkata, ensuring long-term sustainability and service quality for the city's growing population.
