Kolkata Mayor Inaugurates Comprehensive Drainage Upgrade Project in Behala
In a significant move to address persistent waterlogging issues, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim officially flagged off a major drainage revamp project on Wednesday. This initiative, part of the Kolkata Environment and Infrastructure Improvement Project (KEIIP), is set to transform the sewerage infrastructure in Ward 127 over the next couple of years.
Project Details and Scope
The project focuses on laying underground sewer lines across Ward 127, specifically targeting the Shakuntala Park and Sarsuna neighbourhoods in Behala. Currently, these areas rely on surface drains, which often lead to severe inundation even during moderate rainfall. The new underground system is designed to prevent waterlogging, providing much-needed relief to residents, especially during the monsoon seasons.
In addition to the sewer lines, drainage pumping stations will be established to ensure storm water recedes more quickly from waterlogged areas. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the overall drainage efficiency and resilience of the neighbourhoods.
Mayor's Statement and Community Impact
While inaugurating the project, Mayor Firhad Hakim highlighted the importance of this upgrade. "Though KEIIP had previously undertaken drainage revamp plans in some parts of Behala, large sections of Shakuntala Park and Sarsuna were left out. Now, we have commenced a dedicated drainage upgrade plan exclusively for the residents of Ward 127, covering these two major neighbourhoods," he stated.
This project marks a targeted effort to fill the gaps in previous infrastructure improvements, ensuring that all affected communities benefit from modern drainage solutions.

Local residents have expressed optimism about the project's potential impact. Arijit Das, a resident of Sarsuna, shared his hopes for timely completion and effective results. "We have been enduring extraordinary hardships due to waterlogging. I hope this drainage revamp project will be completed on schedule and provide us with relief as soon as possible," Das remarked.
