Jaipur's Ajmer Highway Braces for Major Traffic Disruption Due to Drainage Project
Motorists traveling between the 200-Feet Bypass and Bhankrota on the Ajmer highway in Jaipur should prepare for significant traffic congestion starting Wednesday. The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) will commence digging operations on the northern service roads to install comprehensive drainage and sewerage lines.
Three-Month Construction Timeline and Traffic Impact
Although the construction work is specifically targeted at service lanes, authorities anticipate substantial congestion spreading to the highway's main thoroughfares. The project is expected to continue until May, meaning commuters will likely face diversions and traffic challenges for approximately three months.
A JDA official confirmed the timeline, stating, "The expected deadline for the project is May. It means the diversions and traffic congestion will be at least for the next three months."
Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan Implemented
The civic body has collaborated with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and JDA's traffic wing to develop a detailed traffic management strategy that will remain operational throughout the construction period. Officials have indicated that temporary traffic diversions will be implemented on specific road sections to ensure public safety during the construction activities.
In an official notification, the JDA has appealed to motorists and local residents for patience and cooperation in maintaining smooth traffic flow. "Owing to restrictions on the service lane, traffic volume on the main thoroughfares of the Ajmer Highway may increase. The traffic wing will deploy additional manpower on this stretch as and when required," explained a JDA representative.
Project Details and Community Benefits
The infrastructure project involves laying a substantial 2,800-meter-long stormwater drainage line stretching from the Bhankrota flyover to the powerhouse in Heerapura. With an investment of Rs 15.18 crore, this initiative aligns with the Budget announcement for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
A JDA engineer elaborated on the project's significance, noting, "This drain will permanently resolve the waterlogging problem on the Ajmer Road between Kamala Nehru Nagar and Bhankrota." The drainage infrastructure will specifically benefit residents across a 400-square-hectare catchment area on the highway's northern side.
The drainage line will pass through colonies under Ward 65 and Ward 66 of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, including prominent residential areas such as:
- Kamla Nehru Nagar
- KCC Nagar
- Keshupura
- Bhankrota
This comprehensive drainage solution aims to address long-standing water accumulation issues that have affected these communities during monsoon seasons and heavy rainfall periods.
