The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation is accelerating its green mobility ambitions with concrete steps to establish electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the city. As part of a broader initiative to introduce a fleet of 2,200 electric buses in Hyderabad, the corporation has initiated preparations to set up charging stations at 25 bus depots located within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits.
Powering the Electric Transition
To ensure a smooth rollout, TGSRTC officials recently held a crucial coordination meeting with representatives from the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited. The discussions, which took place on Thursday, focused on the essential power infrastructure required to support the new charging facilities. Key topics included the provision of reliable electricity connections and the technical specifications needed to handle the anticipated load.
Expanding Beyond Hyderabad
While the primary focus remains on Hyderabad, the plan also encompasses neighboring regions. In addition to the 25 depots in the city, two charging points are slated for the Suryapet depot, with one station each planned for Sangareddy and Nalgonda depots. This expansion indicates a regional commitment to sustainable public transport.
RTC officials have estimated that operating these charging stations will require a substantial power supply of nearly 124 megawatts. Detailed deliberations covered various infrastructure requirements, including the laying of dedicated power lines and the execution of other necessary electrical works to support the high-capacity charging systems.
Leadership Commitments and Timelines
Y Nagi Reddy, the vice-chairman and managing director of TGSRTC, emphasized the corporation's determination to introduce electric buses on a large scale within the Greater Hyderabad region before the year ends. He assured that TGSRTC would allocate space at available locations for establishing switching stations or substations essential for the charging infrastructure.
On the power utility side, TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Musharraf Faruqui has issued clear directives to his team. Power officials have been instructed to thoroughly examine the applications submitted by TGSRTC, prepare detailed cost estimates by February 1, and promptly initiate the necessary works for establishing the charging stations. This coordinated approach between transport and power authorities highlights the systematic planning behind Hyderabad's electric bus revolution.
