After facing considerable delays, work on the ambitious Central Spine public space development project at Nava Nagar, located in the heart of Hubballi-Dharwad, has finally been kick-started. This long-awaited initiative is now expected to be completed within a span of 11 months, bringing much-needed urban infrastructure to the densely populated area.
Funding and Execution Details
The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has granted a substantial sum of Rs 3 crore for the project, with the execution being carried out by the HD-BRTS company. According to R Gudaraddi, the General Manager of HD-BRTS, the work officially commenced in December 2025, following the issuance of the work order to the contractor in July of the same year.
Reasons for the Delay
The project's launch was hindered by several factors, including odd sites and a dispute that caused initial setbacks. Additionally, some changes in the project design further contributed to the delay, pushing the start date to December 2025.
Project Scope and Objectives
Spanning approximately 350 metres from the BRTS bus station, the Central Spine project is designed to transform empty spaces in the residential area into a vibrant and inclusive public realm. The primary goals include creating a people-friendly environment and providing dedicated facilities for senior citizens and children.
Key Features and Amenities
The development will feature a comprehensive range of amenities aimed at promoting community well-being and eco-friendly mobility. These include:
- A dedicated cycle track to encourage non-motorized transport
- A children's play area for recreational activities
- A track for joggers and walkers to support fitness routines
- Sitting areas specifically designed for senior citizens
- Installation of electric poles at the median for enhanced lighting
Currently, construction work on the drain and road on both sides is already underway, marking the tangible progress of this initiative.
Community and Official Perspectives
Manjunath Burli, the HDMC ward No 23 corporator, expressed relief that the project is now taking off after much anticipation. He emphasized that the project is strategically designed to enhance the overall liveability of Hubballi-Dharwad by providing quality recreational infrastructure for residents.
Sources indicate that the project was originally planned not only to offer public facilities but also to prevent encroachment on empty land in Nava Nagar, which has grown into a densely populated zone. R Gudaraddi added that the Central Spine project will stand as a landmark development, ensuring the overall development of vacant spaces and offering vibrant, inclusive facilities for people of all age groups.
This initiative represents a significant step towards urban rejuvenation, aligning with broader goals of sustainable development and improved public amenities in the twin cities.
