The Managing Director of HESCOM (Hubli Electricity Supply Company) has categorically denied any plans to privatise the power sector in Karnataka. Addressing media concerns, the HESCOM chief stated that the government remains committed to public sector control over electricity distribution.
Survey Launched to Verify Beneficiaries
Following reports that the government's electricity subsidy scheme was reaching ineligible beneficiaries, HESCOM has initiated a comprehensive survey. The survey aims to identify and remove non-eligible recipients, ensuring that only genuine beneficiaries continue to receive subsidised power.
According to HESCOM officials, the survey is being conducted across all districts under its jurisdiction. Preliminary data suggests that a significant number of households may be incorrectly availing the benefits. The company has urged consumers to cooperate with survey teams and provide accurate information.
Clarification on Privatisation
The HESCOM chief emphasised that the government has no intention of privatising the power sector. "There is no plan to privatise the power sector. The government is fully committed to providing affordable and reliable electricity to all citizens through public sector undertakings," he said.
This clarification comes amid speculation triggered by recent policy discussions and the entry of private players in certain segments. However, officials maintain that distribution will remain under state control.
Impact on Consumers
The survey is expected to streamline the subsidy process, potentially saving the government crores of rupees annually. Consumers who are found ineligible will be removed from the beneficiary list, while those genuinely in need will continue to receive support.
The HESCOM chief assured that no deserving beneficiary would lose access to subsidised electricity. "Our goal is to eliminate leakage and ensure that every rupee of subsidy reaches the intended poor and vulnerable households," he added.
