Guwahati's Major Flyover Project Reaches 85% Completion Milestone
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Assam has announced that the ambitious flyover connecting Cycle Factory to Lal Ganesh in Guwahati is now approximately 85% complete. This critical infrastructure project is progressing rapidly toward its scheduled opening, with officials expressing confidence about meeting the upcoming deadline.
Chief Minister's Inspection and Bihu Deadline
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently conducted a thorough inspection of the construction site, emphasizing the project's importance for urban mobility. Following his assessment, Sarma confirmed that the flyover is expected to become operational to the public ahead of the Bohag Bihu celebrations. The PWD has consequently intensified construction activities with the goal of finalizing the project by March.
Project Specifications and Traffic Relief
This 3.25-kilometer infrastructure development, initiated in 2024 with an estimated budget of Rs 376 crore, is designed to significantly alleviate daily traffic congestion along AK Azad Road. The flyover will particularly benefit the heavily congested Arya Nagar–Lokhra stretch that leads to the national highway, thereby improving connectivity across this vital urban corridor in Guwahati.
Current Construction Status and Remaining Work
According to detailed updates from PWD officials, the foundation work for the flyover has been fully completed. However, two pier caps and girders in the Barsapara area still require installation. The deck work is actively progressing, with 57 out of the total 68 slabs already placed, leaving 11 slabs remaining to be positioned.
Execution Challenges and Innovative Solutions
The project has encountered several execution hurdles during its construction phase, most notably the complex relocation of underground utilities. A PWD official from the Central Guwahati division explained that shifting water pipelines belonging to the Guwahati Jal Board and electricity poles maintained by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited created substantial obstacles for construction workers, leading to temporary delays in certain phases.
To overcome ongoing challenges, including heavy daytime traffic and interference from unauthorized street vendors, the construction team has implemented an unconventional work schedule. Work now commences at 1 AM to maximize productivity during low-traffic hours. Despite these difficulties, officials maintain that the project remains within its original timeline constraints.
Future Expansion Possibilities
The PWD is currently evaluating a proposal to extend an arm of the flyover to the Barasapara area, though this expansion plan has not yet received official sanction. This potential extension would further enhance the flyover's connectivity benefits for Guwahati residents.
As construction accelerates toward completion, this flyover represents a significant step forward in addressing Guwahati's persistent traffic challenges while improving overall urban infrastructure in Assam's largest city.
