Gurgaon Sewer Repair: MCG Fixes Most Critical Spots, Aims for April-May Completion

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) announced on Friday that it has addressed the majority of the city's 40 most severe sewer and drainage trouble spots, although several key projects remain incomplete. Officials have now set a target to finalize all remaining works by April or May of this year.

Progress Review and Project Status

The current status was thoroughly reviewed during a meeting of the sewerage management cell (SMC), which was chaired by Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya. According to data from MCG records, out of the 40 identified projects under the city's sewer-repair initiative, only 12 have been fully completed. The remaining 28 projects are currently in progress at various stages of completion.

Of the ongoing works, 10 projects are between 25% and 50% complete, 11 are between 50% and 75% complete, and 7 are between 75% and 100% complete. This detailed breakdown highlights the varied pace of implementation across different locations.

The S-40 Initiative Explained

Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya provided insights into the initiative, stating, "The initiative under which the work is going on is called S-40. It is aimed at resolving long-standing sewerage and waterlogging issues across the city within fixed timelines and improving civic infrastructure." This program represents a focused effort to tackle persistent urban challenges that have plagued residents for years.

Detailed Breakdown of Ongoing Projects

Projects at 25%-50% Completion Stage:

  • Sewer line replacement in Khandsa village
  • Desilting works in Basai Part-2 and Begumpur Khatola
  • Cleaning of lines in Devi Lal Colony
  • Desilting in Chakkarpur, Kanhai village, Sector 45, and Sushant Lok C-Block

Projects at 50%-75% Completion Stage:

  • Cleaning and rehabilitation in Rajendra Park
  • Trunk line replacement in Islampur
  • Sewer upgrades in Mohyal Colony
  • Cleaning in LIG Colony, Sector 31, and parts of Rajiv Nagar and Prem Nagar

Projects Nearing Completion (75%-100%):

  • Trunk sewer replacement in Jharsa
  • Master line desilting in New Colony
  • Sewer and water line upgrades along with road restoration in Saraswati Enclave

Completed Works and Infrastructure Improvements

Fully completed works encompass a range of repairs and upgrades across multiple localities. These include improvements in Saraswati Enclave, Mohammadpur Jharsa, Nurpur Mod-Badshapur, Ullawas, Bandhwari, Sector 42, Sector 43, and Laxmi Garden. Significant infrastructure enhancements have also been achieved, such as the installation of an additional sewage pump at the Sarai Alawardi treatment plant and the completion of trenchless pipeline work along the Dwarka Expressway.

In Prempuri (ward 13), sewer lines were effectively cleared using a bucket machine at a reported cost of Rs 17 lakh, demonstrating the corporation's investment in specialized equipment to address complex drainage issues.

Resident Concerns and Ongoing Challenges

Despite these advancements, residents in several localities continue to report persistent problems with sewer overflows and delayed works that disrupt daily life. Abhimanyu Yadav, a resident of Sector 40, voiced his frustration, saying, "The sewer overflow in Sector 40 at multiple places has become a persistent problem. The road is badly damaged. Despite repeated complaints, no visible action has been taken. Desilting was inaugurated a month ago, but nothing is visible on the ground."

These complaints underscore the gap between official announcements and ground-level implementation, highlighting the need for more transparent and timely execution of civic projects. The MCG's efforts to complete all projects by April or May will be closely monitored by affected communities who have endured these infrastructure deficiencies for extended periods.
