Gurgaon Reclaims 5 Acres, Processes 1.1 Lakh Tonnes of Legacy Waste
Gurgaon clears 1.1 lakh tonnes of legacy waste, reclaims land

In a significant environmental cleanup drive, the Municipal Corporation of Manesar (MCM) has successfully processed a massive 1.1 lakh tonnes of legacy waste that had been festering at dumping sites in Gurgaon. This extensive operation has led to the reclamation of nearly five acres of valuable urban land, officials announced.

Massive Cleanup Across Key Sites

The legacy waste, which had accumulated over several years, was spread across approximately seven acres in IMT Manesar's Sector 8. The corporation has now cleared waste from more than four acres of this site. In a parallel effort, a one-acre dumping station in Garhi village was completely cleared. The entire mammoth exercise took about nine months to complete.

Scientific Processing and Future Prevention

According to officials, the waste was processed in strict adherence to government guidelines under the Swachh Bharat Mission. Two private agencies were engaged for the task. During processing, the waste was scientifically segregated. Plastic and metal were separated, while organic waste was converted into a soil-like material used for landfilling.

Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) generated from the processed waste was sent to paper mills within the state. The corporation has obtained certificates from these mills to formally document the disposal of the RDF, ensuring a transparent and accountable process.

A Collaborative Effort for a Cleaner Future

To prevent the recurrence of such massive waste piles, authorities have implemented new measures. Fresh waste arriving at the sites is now being segregated simultaneously to stop further accumulation. Security has been tightened with the deployment of CCTV cameras and personnel to monitor the dumping sites.

MCM Commissioner Pradeep Singh emphasized the critical role of public cooperation. He urged residents to segregate wet and dry waste at the household level and hand it over separately to garbage collection vehicles. This, he stated, is essential to maintain the cleanliness of the reclaimed area.

Swachh Bharat Mission executive engineer (XeN) Nijesh Kumar detailed the technical aspects of the cleanup. The corporation's efforts are ongoing to enhance solid waste management and prevent the formation of new legacy waste dumps within municipal limits.

In a forward-looking step, the private agency tasked with doorstep waste collection has begun its work and has installed RFID tags to ensure thorough monitoring and achieve the goal of 100% waste collection from households.
