Union Government Approves Major Railway Line Doubling Project in Coimbatore
The Union government has given its long-awaited approval for the Irugur–Podanur railway line doubling project, allocating a substantial Rs 277.42 crore for its implementation. This critical infrastructure development spans 10.77 kilometers and is poised to transform passenger and freight movement in the Coimbatore region.
Enhancing Connectivity on a Historic Route
The Irugur–Podanur section serves as a vital link on the Chennai–Thiruvananthapuram route. Currently operating as a single-line track, it has significantly restricted the number of Kerala-bound trains, causing operational bottlenecks. This project will dramatically improve connectivity, allowing for smoother and more efficient rail services.
Subramanian N, General Secretary of the Podanur Train Users Association, emphasized that this project, pending for nearly 15 years, will greatly enhance Chennai-Coimbatore-Kerala connectivity. "It will boost both passenger and freight services, addressing long-standing issues of congestion and delay," he stated.
Significant Travel Time Reduction and Increased Capacity
The doubling project is expected to bring down travel time to Kerala by approximately one hour. Currently, around 10 trains operate on this stretch, but after the upgrade, the railway line could handle up to 15 additional passenger trains daily. This expansion will alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure and provide more travel options for commuters.
Notably, the rail distance between Irugur and Podanur via Coimbatore is 23 kilometers. The direct line will reduce this distance to just 10 kilometers, resulting in substantial time savings. Passenger trains are projected to save 45 minutes, while freight trains could see a reduction of 120 minutes in detention time, enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Historical Significance and Modern Impact
The Irugur-Podanur stretch, first laid in 1862 by the British, stands as one of the oldest railway lines in Coimbatore district. This modernization effort honors its historical legacy while preparing it for future demands. Subramanian highlighted that the project is crucial for Coimbatore's industrial growth and the development of Podanur as a second terminal, which would further streamline rail operations.
Economic and Operational Benefits
According to the Centre's announcement, when combined with ongoing works, the Chennai-Coimbatore-Podanur section will evolve into a high-capacity four-line corridor. This upgrade is projected to increase freight handling capacity by 3.12 million tonnes per annum, generating an additional Rs 11.77 crore in annual revenue for the railways.
The line utilization, currently at 60%, is expected to rise to 131% by 2027-28, indicating a substantial boost in efficiency and throughput. "These projects will lead to faster travel, improved freight efficiency, enhanced safety, and sustained economic growth," the railways affirmed.
Alleviating Congestion and Future Prospects
Subramanian also pointed out that the project will ease congestion at Coimbatore Junction and reduce traffic within the city. If redevelopment works begin at Coimbatore Junction, it would further minimize inconvenience to rail passengers, creating a more seamless travel experience.
