Ghaziabad Launches Rs 227 Crore Development Drive Amid Pollution Crisis
Ghaziabad's Rs 227 Crore Development Plan Targets Pollution

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation Unveils Major Rs 227 Crore Development Initiative

The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has officially launched a comprehensive development project valued at Rs 227 crore, with officials confirming that work across all 100 wards of the city will commence by March. This ambitious initiative aims to address multiple civic issues, including infrastructure, waste management, and environmental concerns.

Focus on Air Quality and Beautification

In response to alarming pollution data, GMC has allocated Rs 30 crore specifically to improve air quality in Ghaziabad. According to recent analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Ghaziabad was ranked as the most polluted city in India in January 2026, recording a monthly average PM2.5 concentration of 184 μg/m³. The city breached daily National Ambient Air Quality Standards every day that month, experiencing 24 'very poor' days, four 'severe' days, two 'poor' days, and one 'moderate' day.

A GMC official explained, "The Rs 30 crore allocation for air quality improvement will fund construction of drains, RCC roads, interlocking tiles, and other infrastructure projects designed to reduce pollution levels." Additionally, approximately Rs 6 crore has been designated for city beautification efforts, while around Rs 32 crore is earmarked for enhancing solid waste management plants.

Infrastructure Revamp in Key Areas

The corporation is prioritizing road and sewer network improvements in several locations. In Nyay Khand 1, a Rs 17 crore project will address deteriorating conditions, particularly on the stretch opposite Supertech Apartment where the road has been dug up and sewer water is spilling openly. Resident Ashish Kumar expressed frustration, stating, "One side of the stretch has been closed, forcing traffic to move sluggishly on the other half which is riddled with potholes. It appears GMC abandoned the site after digging, leaving residents to suffer from civic neglect."

CM Green Road Infrastructure Development Scheme

Under the CM Green Road Infrastructure Development Scheme-Urban Phase 2, six roads in trans-Hindon areas including Indirapuram, Vaishali, and Kaushambi are scheduled for revamping. In Indirapuram alone, four key stretches will be developed:

  • From Bala Ji Mandir to NH9 via Kaveri Marg (approximately 4 km)
  • From NH9 to Balaji Mandir via Kala Patthar
  • From Kala Patthar to Shaheed Capt Mangal Pandey Marg via Sushila Naiya Marg (about 2 km)
  • From Kala Patthar to Shaheed Capt Mangal Pandey Marg via Kasturba Gandhi Marg (1.8 km)
  • From Sushila Naiya Marg to Kala Patthar via Shipra Mall (1 km)

For Phase 1 of the scheme, officials have directed completion within three months for two critical stretches: Sheshnag Dwar to Hindon Elevated Road and Mohan Nagar Bus Stand to Hindon IAF Station.

This extensive development plan represents GMC's multi-pronged approach to transforming Ghaziabad's urban landscape while tackling its severe pollution challenges through strategic infrastructure investments.
