New Delhi's Public Works Department has taken a concrete step to improve road safety. The department has allocated five crore rupees for installing Jersey barriers on multiple busy stretches in west Delhi. This initiative aims to reduce accidents and regulate chaotic traffic movement effectively.
Targeting Dangerous Driving Practices
These precast reinforced cement concrete barriers serve a clear purpose. They physically separate traffic streams to discourage risky behaviors. Wrong-side driving, illegal U-turns, and abrupt lane changes often cause crashes and congestion. The barriers are designed to stop these violations directly.
Key Locations for Installation
Officials have identified several arterial and internal roads for the barrier project. The list includes Gurudwara Road, BA-BB Block Road, and B2 Block Sabzi Mandi Road. Prem Nagar Gurudwara Road and Bhai Kanheya Ji Marg, also known as ITI Road, are part of the plan.
Dr Kundan Lal Marg and Maya Puri Road from Subhash Nagar Crossing to Rajouri Apartments will see barriers too. Other areas include Ayodhya Prasad Chopra Marg, Vedic Marg, and Sardar Kulwant Singh Sethi Marg. Internal roads of Subhash Nagar and the DA-1 to DB-1 stretch in Hari Nagar complete the list.
Focus on Physical Traffic Control
The PWD emphasizes physical control over enforcement alone. By blocking unauthorized crossings and turns, these barriers enforce lane discipline automatically. They work even when traffic police are not present, providing constant regulation.
Protecting Pedestrians and Streamlining Flow
Pedestrian safety gets a significant boost from this project. In market areas and residential neighborhoods, vehicles often encroach onto footpaths. The barriers will protect walkers by keeping vehicles in their lanes.
On high-traffic corridors like Maya Puri Road and Gurudwara Road, officials expect smoother traffic flow. During peak hours, preventing haphazard merging and last-minute maneuvers should reduce bottlenecks. This move aims to make commuting safer and more efficient for everyone.
