Delhi PWD Announces Major Road Safety and Infrastructure Overhaul in North Delhi
In a significant move to enhance urban mobility and safety, the Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has unveiled comprehensive plans for signage upgrades in Rohini alongside new footpath and drainage projects on key corridors. This initiative aims to substantially improve road safety and pedestrian infrastructure across the northern and north-western regions of the national capital.
Rs 97.9 Lakh Allocated for Signage Enhancement in Rohini
The department has earmarked approximately Rs 97.9 lakh specifically for signage works in the Rohini area. This project involves a detailed survey of roads to identify missing or damaged signs, followed by the preparation of fresh drawings that adhere strictly to the codes set by the Indian Roads Congress and the specifications mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Sources within the PWD highlighted that this push is a direct response to widespread issues such as defacement, torn reflective sheets, and missing boards across various parts of the city. These problems have been noted to reduce night-time visibility and compromise overall road safety, prompting corrective action. Similar drives have previously been undertaken in East and South Delhi, indicating a city-wide effort to standardize and improve signage.
Major Footpath and Drainage Works Proposed for Key Corridors
In addition to the signage upgrades, the PWD has proposed extensive footpath and drainage works on two crucial north Delhi stretches: Bhamashah Road and Lucknow Road. These projects are designed to enhance pedestrian accessibility and manage waterlogging, thereby boosting safety and convenience for residents.
The department plans to invest about Rs 5.5 crore in the construction and improvement of footpaths and drainage systems on Bhamashah Road. Similarly, around Rs 2.4 crore has been allocated for similar infrastructure work at Lucknow Road. This brings the total investment for these footpath and drainage initiatives to approximately Rs 7.9 crore, underscoring the department's commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure.

The combined allocation of Rs 8.4 crore for both signage and footpath-drainage projects reflects a holistic strategy by the PWD to address multiple facets of road safety and pedestrian infrastructure.
