Delhi LG Approves BJP Leader as DJB Vice-Chairman

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday approved the nomination of BJP leader Satish Upadhyay as the Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The nominations of three other members were also approved, filling key vacancies in the water utility's governing body more than a year after the formation of the present Assembly.

Appointments Approved Under Delhi Water Board Act

The appointments were approved following a proposal submitted by the Urban Development Department under provisions of the Delhi Water Board Act, 1998. Besides Upadhyay, BJP MLAs Manoj Kumar Shokeen and Ajay Kumar Mahawar have been nominated as members of the board. Rajesh Kumar Goel, representing the Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB), has also been appointed as a member.

Two-Year Term for Appointees

According to officials, the nominations have been made for a period of two years from the date the appointees assume charge of their respective offices. The posts of Vice-Chairman and board members had been vacant since the constitution of the current Assembly in February 2025.

This move is expected to streamline the functioning of the Delhi Jal Board, which oversees water supply and sewage services in the national capital. The appointments come after a prolonged delay, with stakeholders raising concerns about the vacancies affecting decision-making and service delivery.

Satish Upadhyay, a prominent BJP figure, is expected to bring administrative experience to the role. The other nominated members, including MLAs and a DCB representative, will contribute to the board's governance. The Delhi Water Board Act provides the legal framework for these appointments, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
