Delhi Government Launches Major Infrastructure Project in West Delhi
The Delhi government has initiated a significant road and drain repair project along the Nangloi-Najafgarh road in West Delhi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made this announcement on Tuesday, highlighting the initiative's goal to alleviate traffic congestion and provide relief to daily commuters.
Foundation Stone Laid for ₹64.04 Crore Project
Lt Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project. The total cost of the undertaking is ₹64.04 crore. Under this scheme, authorities will construct new stormwater drains and upgrade existing drainage systems along the road corridor.
Addressing Long-Standing Issues
LG VK Saxena recalled his visit to several areas in September 2024, including Mundka, Nangloi, Kanjhawala, Phirni Road, and Rohtak Road. He described the situation he witnessed as extremely dilapidated. Sewage water flowed openly on damaged roads, creating miserable conditions due to potholes and filth. Saxena stated he had directed the government to take immediate corrective action at that time.
However, Saxena noted that due to neglect by the previous government, the necessary work could not progress. The current administration has now taken up the challenge to address these infrastructure deficiencies.
Comprehensive Drainage Improvement Plan
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the Delhi government is working systematically to improve the city's entire drainage and stormwater management system. They are employing new and modern approaches to achieve this goal. Once completed, this project will enhance drainage across the entire corridor, upgrade road surfaces, and provide significant relief from traffic bottlenecks for commuters.
In addition to drainage work, the road itself is being strengthened and reconstructed. Authorities are installing crash barriers in the central verge to ensure safe and effective drainage, particularly during the monsoon season.
Broader Water Management Initiatives
Gupta further explained that multiple related projects are proceeding simultaneously. These include regular cleaning of drains, construction of new trunk drains, and implementation of sewage treatment plants. The ultimate objective is to ensure that only treated water flows into the Yamuna River in the future. This comprehensive approach aims to permanently free the capital from the persistent problem of waterlogging.
Officials Highlight Project Significance
Public Works Department Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh, who attended the event, stated that several roads in this area had remained in extremely dilapidated condition for many years. The present government has taken responsibility for their reconstruction, completed the tendering process, and commenced construction work.
Transport Minister Pankaj Singh added that for the past eleven years, conditions in the area had deteriorated to such an extent that neither pedestrians nor vehicles could move comfortably. The situation worsened dramatically during monsoon seasons, creating additional hardships for residents and commuters alike.
This infrastructure project represents a concerted effort by the Delhi government to address long-standing urban challenges in West Delhi, promising improved mobility and better living conditions for the area's inhabitants.
