Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Launches Major Infrastructure Push in East Delhi
In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone on Monday for a series of projects totaling approximately Rs 1,075 crore in east Delhi. This initiative aims to upgrade roads and strengthen drainage systems in the trans-Yamuna areas, addressing long-standing civic challenges.
Comprehensive Project Details and Financial Allocation
The projects, to be executed by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, are designed to ease traffic congestion and mitigate waterlogging problems that plague the region. The largest financial component, estimated at Rs 782 crore, is allocated for strengthening and improving 236 roads across east Delhi. Additionally, five foot overbridges will be constructed at busy intersections at a cost of Rs 21 crore to enhance pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
Nearly Rs 272 crore will be invested in reconstructing 10 drains and improving three existing ones to increase their discharge capacity. This is crucial for preventing flooding during the monsoon season, when several parts of east Delhi often face severe water accumulation and traffic disruptions. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department will also construct 24 boundary walls and develop 18 roads and bridges as part of efforts to strengthen embankments and improve structural resilience.
Addressing Monsoon Challenges and Infrastructure Resilience
By integrating road strengthening with drainage upgrades, the projects seek to prevent recurring damage to infrastructure caused by water accumulation, as highlighted by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). During the monsoon, east Delhi has historically experienced flooding that leads to significant traffic disruptions and property damage. These measures are expected to provide a sustainable solution by enhancing the area's overall resilience to extreme weather events.
Leadership Emphasis on Quality and Timely Implementation
Addressing a gathering at Ramlila Ground in Vivek Vihar, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that strong infrastructure is essential for balanced development. She asserted that these projects will deliver visible improvements on the ground, transforming the daily lives of residents. Gupta also stressed the importance of time-bound implementation, directing officials to maintain high-quality standards and transparency throughout the execution process.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma noted that the combined outlay of Rs 1,075 crore represents a significant infrastructure intervention targeting core civic concerns. This investment underscores the government's commitment to improving urban living conditions and fostering economic growth in the region.
