North Gujarat to Get Its First Civilian Airport at Deesa
The Government of India has granted approval to convert the Deesa Air Force Station in Banaskantha district into a civilian–military airport. This landmark decision will establish the first civilian airport in the North Gujarat region, addressing a long-standing demand from local residents and officials.
Strategic Land Allocation and Project Details
According to senior state government officials, an in-principle decision has been made to allocate 100 acres of strategically located land around the air force station for the new airport development. The total area of the airport complex will span approximately 4,500 acres, creating a significant aviation infrastructure hub for the region.
The existing runway at Deesa Air Force Station measures 3.3 kilometres in length, making it the longest runway among all airports in Gujarat. This substantial infrastructure will accommodate various aircraft types and support both civilian and military operations effectively.
Political Advocacy and Regional Impact
Minister of State for Forest and Environment Pravin Mali, who represents the Deesa assembly constituency as a first-time MLA, had actively campaigned for a civilian airport at Deesa. His efforts have now materialized with this government approval, which will significantly benefit residents of North Gujarat districts who currently depend on Ahmedabad airport for air travel.
The terminal building for the new airport will be constructed over approximately 100 acres, with the government planning to make a special budgetary provision for the proposed airport in the upcoming state budget.
Strategic Location and Connectivity Advantages
The proposed airport enjoys an exceptionally strategic location, positioned just 18 kilometers from Deesa city. Its proximity to major transportation corridors enhances its accessibility and regional importance:
- The Jamnagar–Amritsar highway, part of the Bharatmala project, is located approximately 35 kilometers from the Air Force station
- The Ahmedabad–Tharad highway is also situated around 35 kilometers away
- The temple town of Ambaji lies about 110 kilometers from the proposed airport
- The Seema Darshan site at Nadabet along the India–Pakistan border is approximately 100 kilometers away
- The proposed day-and-night zoo and safari at Deesa will be within 225 kilometers of the airport
This strategic positioning will not only benefit residents of North Gujarat but also serve neighboring districts in Rajasthan, creating a cross-border transportation hub that enhances regional connectivity and economic development.
Addressing Long-standing Transportation Needs
The conversion of Deesa Air Force Station into a dual-use facility represents a significant infrastructure advancement for North Gujarat. For years, residents of this region have faced the inconvenience of traveling to Ahmedabad for air transportation needs. This new airport will reduce travel time, boost local economies, and improve accessibility to national and international destinations.
The civilian–military airport model ensures optimal utilization of existing infrastructure while meeting both defense requirements and civilian aviation needs. This approach represents efficient resource management and infrastructure development that serves multiple purposes simultaneously.
As the project moves forward, it is expected to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and position North Gujarat as a more accessible region for business and tourism. The combination of military precision and civilian accessibility makes this airport project uniquely positioned to serve diverse needs while contributing to regional development.
