DDA Implements Automation System for Sewage Treatment Plants in Delhi Parks
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced a significant move toward modernizing water management by implementing an automation system in sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the capital. This initiative aims to enable real-time monitoring of the quality of treated water supplied to approximately 100 parks throughout Delhi, marking a crucial step in enhancing urban greenery and environmental sustainability.
Continuous Monitoring of Key Water Parameters
The proposed automation system will facilitate continuous surveillance of essential water quality parameters, ensuring that treated water meets stringent standards. Key metrics to be monitored include biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), pH levels, and the quantity of treated water generated. This comprehensive approach allows for precise tracking and management of water quality, which is vital for maintaining healthy park ecosystems.
Transition from Manual to Automated Processes
Currently, STPs in DDA parks are monitored manually by section officers or other staff members, who check water quality and record meter readings. Payments to private concessionaires operating these plants are made on a per-kiloliter per day (KLD) basis, based on treated water supply. To mitigate errors and verify agency claims regularly, DDA intends to introduce real-time monitoring. An official emphasized that this shift will not only reduce human error but also contribute to improved greenery in parks by ensuring consistent water quality.
Identified Parks and Implementation Details
Among the parks selected for the new automation system are several key locations across Delhi. These include:
- National Highway Park (NHP) at Dayanand Vihar, shifted to Children's Park, Vivek Vihar, featuring a 10 KLD plant installed in 2022.
- A park at Ashoka Niketan, with the site moved to a green area at Lalita Park, also equipped with a 10 KLD plant from 2022.
- E to I Block Park at Ashok Vihar, which has a 25 KLD plant installed in 2021.
- Sheesh Mahal Park at Shalimar Bagh, boasting a 250 KLD plant installed in 2023.
- MP Green Area A-10 at Narela, operational since 2021 with a 50 KLD plant.
DDA has invited expressions of interest for this project, highlighting that STPs in its parks are either installed and operated by private concessionaires or, in some cases, supplied through plants managed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Adoption of Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technologies
In addition to automation, DDA has directed the adoption of suitable and latest wastewater treatment technologies during STP installations. This directive applies specifically to STPs with a capacity of up to 100 KLD, ensuring that the infrastructure remains efficient and environmentally friendly. The integration of cutting-edge technology aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of sewage treatment processes, supporting Delhi's broader goals of sustainable urban development.
This initiative represents a proactive approach by DDA to leverage technology for better resource management, ultimately fostering greener and healthier public spaces in the national capital.
