DC orders shift of students from poor hostel in Mandya

Mandya: Taking serious note of the poor living conditions at the social welfare department's post-matric girls' hostel in Bandigowda Layout, Deputy Commissioner Kumara has directed officials to immediately shift the students to a spacious and well-equipped building within a week.

Inspection by Upalokayukta

The directive follows a surprise inspection by Upalokayukta Justice B Veerappa, who reportedly expressed strong displeasure over the condition of the hostels named after Dr BR Ambedkar and Maharishi Valmiki. During the visit, he observed that students were living in conditions described as "worse than a jail" and instructed officials to relocate them to a better facility within 15 days.

Review Meeting and Remedial Measures

In the wake of the inspection, the Deputy Commissioner convened a review meeting on Monday with social welfare department officials to discuss the deficiencies and ensure immediate remedial measures. Kumara instructed the Deputy Director of the department to conduct regular inspections of all hostels and ensure that students are provided with basic amenities, hygiene, and a safe environment. Hostel wardens and officers concerned would be held directly responsible for any inconvenience or hardship faced by students.

Referring specifically to the Bandigowda Layout hostel, he noted that the existing conditions were unacceptable and directed officials to identify and shift the students to a suitable alternative building without delay. The relocation is expected to be completed within a week, ensuring minimal disruption to the students' education and daily routine.

The Deputy Commissioner also emphasized the need for sustained monitoring and accountability to prevent such issues in the future. He called for a comprehensive review of all hostels under the social welfare department to ensure compliance with prescribed standards.
